Comments Off on Wakeboard World Championships Korea 2013

Just home after about 24 hours travel from Korea….. While I had made it through to semi-finals unfortunately there was a protest on the scoring from another team and it was revised and I just missed getting through by one point!! It’s such a pity but we all had a good time and big congrats to Lindsay Whelan and Aisling Deegan for making Finals. Time to go ride in Cavan again before heading to Xtreme Gene later this month. Comments Off on Wakeboard World Championships, Busan, Korea

Having a brilliant time out here in Busan, Korea at the Wakeboard World Championships. There are over 200 athletes from 30 countries and the level of riding just gets higher each year.

The Koreans are looking after us very well and so far we have had 5 of our 7 Irish Team Riders advance to the next round. I was stoked to qualify first in my heat and big congrats also to Paul Johnston, David Coates, Lindsay Whelan and Aisling Deegan…. Details

Comments Off on Opening Ceremony, World Games, Cali

Hi everyone,
Colombia is AMAZING!! After a very long flight and an overnight in a different hotel I finally got to Los Andes, outside Cali, yesterday. The Wakeboarding and Water skiing are being held at this golf resort. Last night we attended the Opening Ceremony and I’ve never seen anything like it, even the video below doesn’t capture the atmosphere. It really was the most unforgettable experience with dance, gymnastics and a fantastic fireworks display. There were 35,000 people inside the stadium and another 40,000 outside watching on large screens and apparently there were about 1 million people on the streets!! Today we had our practice run on the Nautique G23. I had some problems with my rope length but hopefully all will be OK tomorrow for qualifying.
Thanks,
David

Comments Off on Wakeboarding – from Dublin to Orlando

It has been a really eventful couple of weeks! After finally finishing my exams, I had a week at home to ride and have the banter with all the lads. After this we had such a sick weekend riding at the Dublin Docklands Festival. There were about 50,000 people there over the whole weekend. Thanks to Des Burke-Kennedy for the photos.

Wakeboarding night shoot

Comments Off on Wakeboard World Cup Results – Mandurah 2013

Hi everyone,

It’s been a brilliant weekend out here in Mandurah in Western Australia at the Wakeboard World Cup. Three of us from Ireland were selected to compete, Sian Hurst, DC (David Coates) and myself. Unfortunately, none of us managed to make it through the heats but we still had a sick time out here in 30 degree heat and we celebrated Paddy’s day in the sunshine. Details

Comments Off on Xtreme Gene before World Cup

Hi everyone,

Just got home from Xtreme-gene in Spain where I spent 4 days riding to get me ready for the World Cup in Australia this weekend!
I had such an unreal time out there riding with a bunch of cool people like Andreas, DC, and Jack Hammersley! It was pretty sick riding with them as we had a good variety of riding, from myself and DC practising contest passes to Jack and Andreas doing big floaty styley tricks! Details
Comments Off on New cable wakeboard open in Dublin Docklands!!!!

Grand Canal Dock

Hey guys,

This week has been a week that will be remembered for a long time! Ireland got its first ever permanent cable system! I think it’s really going to change things for wakeboarding in Ireland. Not only for riders like myself who want to train as often as they can for competitions and to improve our riding as a whole, but also to really get the name of the sport and what it’s all about out there to everyone. Wakeboarding & Banter

Hey Guys,

Just back from a really really fun weekend riding at my place in Cavan. Fortunately, the weather was actually okay for most of the weekend so we were able to get a good bit of shredding done!

On Saturday it was myself, Sian Hurst, Sam Carne (who hadn’t ridden in the cold for 7 years!!) and Brian Deegan who took his first set after 11 months off the water due to his knee surgery. We had a great time and the water was like glass, and the sun even popped out for about 12 minutes!

Then on Saturday we were joined by Ashley Murray (Big Ash) to come for a shred or two. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t quite as on par as Saturday, but none the less, we all managed to have a slick time in the rain, and do a few cool tricks and we had a lot of banter.

Looking forward to getting out to Xtreme Gene in Spain very soon before heading to Aus for the World Cup in March 🙂 Details

Comments Off on Wakeboarding at ‘Chain of Wakes’ in Florida

Hi guys,

I’m just back from Orlando Florida where I went to train with Stew Mackie (British team coach) at his place on ‘Chain of Wakes’, in Winter Haven. It’s a really cool spot with lots of calm water, and much to my surprise, the weather was great considering it was winter! We had a load of bants on the boat every day and just in general.

Comments Off on Palembang – Wakeboard World Cup Results

Unfortunately I didn’t make it out of Semis but big congratulations to Harley Clifford (AUS), Tony Iacconi (AUS) and Andrew Adkison (USA) on coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the World Cup here in Indonesia and to Massi Piffaretti from Italy on taking 4th. The Final was awesome and everybody killed it! In the Women’s Finals Raimi Merritt (USA) took the Gold followed by Amber Wing (AUS) with Silver and Nicola Butler (UK) took the Bronze. Also, well done to Carro Djupso from Sweden who got back up on the water following an injury to make sure she got through to Finals! Details

Comments Off on Wakeboard World Cup Palembang – Day 1

We arrived safely in Palembang after over 24 hours travelling. It’s been about 33 degrees here which is a big change from back home! The hotel is great and the people are friendly. I became a millionaire here today! I wasn’t able to change my Euro so I took out one million Rupiah from the ATM machine – about €85 haha!

We had a practice run earlier today and the boat being used is the Mastercraft X2. The Opening Ceremony was amazing with loads of TV crews and journalists and there were thousands of musicians, dancers and children who formed a big parade and all the athletes from 24 different countries were there. Qualifying rounds are tomorrow (timetable below the photos). If you happen to go to bed late or get up early you can watch the action on www.iwwf.tv Thanks, David

Comments Off on Weekend before Wakeboard World Cup in Palembang

It was the last weekend to be able to ride before the World Cup. We had a few riders still brave enough to hit the cold water in Cavan on Saturday! David Coates was just back from Spain, Carro Djupso joined us all the way from Sweden en route to the World Cup. Ashley Murray came down from Northern Ireland and of course Sian and myself from Dublin. It was so cold that the first few feet of my rope was frozen solid – more like a bar than a rope!

Then yesterday we had the AGM of our Irish Wakeboard Federation where all kinds of issues get discussed and clubs book comps for next year.

Lough Sillan, Ireland

On Wednesday Sian and I fly out to Palembang in Indonesia. It’s a long long journey….. We fly Dublin to Dubai, then to Singapore and finally on to Palembang in South Sumatra. It’s 33 degrees there at the moment so that will be a nice change. Can’t wait for the last competition of the year and to see all the other riders again as everyone has been training in different countries – from Thailand to the USA.. Details

Comments Off on Wakeboarding at Xtreme Gene – October

Hi everyone,

Just back from another amazing trip to Xtreme Gene in Spain. The weather was much better than in Ireland and there were about 20 riders and skiers there which is pretty good for this time of the year as they close down soon until March. I had a great time on the water and up in all the local restaurants and bars. It was good to see DC from the Irish Team and fellow World Cup rider Carro Djupso from Sweden. Also a big thanks to Jose from Venezolion Photography for all the filming. Hopefully we’ll get to finish it next time I’m out there. Details

Wakeboarding in Ireland

Well it has been a quiet month competition wise but that gave me a chance to ride with some friends at the lake and have a couple of the Monster crew up one weekend. I started university too and had my Debs (Prom) night so it has been busy in general. I’m heading off to Xtreme Gene later this month so I can’t wait for that and then Sian Hurst and I have been invited to the next World Cup stop in Palembang in Indonesia in November which should be brilliant too.

Cheers,

David

Comments Off on EA Wakeboard Championships Kiev

Hi everyone,

Well, I didn’t make it out of semi-finals (fell on a 7) but am so stoked that David Coates took 4th place in Finals and Sian Hurst won the Gold medal. She had a brilliant run and is the first woman ever to land a mobe in a European Championships when she stuck her Whirlybird in qualifying rounds AND Finals. So congrats to Sian! Also big congrats to fellow Monster rider, Dylan Mitchell who took bronze in the Junior Men and also to Massi Piffaretti from Italy for winning the Open Men. Details
