Training in Florida

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. Don’t know where the time has gone! I’ve been out here in Winter Haven, Florida training for a few weeks in the run up to the World Championships in Mexico next week. Lots of banter at Chain of Wakes and lots of other riders out here too.

Nose Problems!

Finally, after six months of not being able to breathe properly due to ‘nose trouble’, I learnt that it’s all treatable without never ending nasal sprays where, even though my treatment is allowed under WADA rules, I have had to worry that the dosage I need might breach the urinary guideline levels for dope testing.! I visited an ENT consultant who has prescribed stuff (and advice!) that should clear up my rhinitis for once and for all. It’ll be great to be able to breathe again properly and not have to worry about catching my breath while I’m training. Thanks a million to Mark Rafferty!

It’s been great training out here at Chain of Wakes in Winter Haven. Big thanks to Dan Nott for the footage and sorry about my poor editing skills!

Comments Off on Wakeboard World Championships Korea 2013

Just home after about 24 hours travel from Korea….. While I had made it through to semi-finals unfortunately there was a protest on the scoring from another team and it was revised and I just missed getting through by one point!! It’s such a pity but we all had a good time and big congrats to Lindsay Whelan and Aisling Deegan for making Finals. Time to go ride in Cavan again before heading to Xtreme Gene later this month. Comments Off on Wakeboard World Championships, Busan, Korea

Having a brilliant time out here in Busan, Korea at the Wakeboard World Championships. There are over 200 athletes from 30 countries and the level of riding just gets higher each year.

The Koreans are looking after us very well and so far we have had 5 of our 7 Irish Team Riders advance to the next round. I was stoked to qualify first in my heat and big congrats also to Paul Johnston, David Coates, Lindsay Whelan and Aisling Deegan…. Details

Cuffed Toe Back 9

So stoked to land a Cuffed Toe Back 9!!!! I’m pretty sure I’m the first person to ever stick this. It’s a trick I’ve been working on for about a year now and I tried it a lot in Florida. I’m so happy to have landed it last week on my own lake in Cavan on a ‘European Wake’. Here’s a short teaser and full video to follow shortly.

Thanks,

David

Comments Off on Opening Ceremony, World Games, Cali

Hi everyone,
Colombia is AMAZING!! After a very long flight and an overnight in a different hotel I finally got to Los Andes, outside Cali, yesterday. The Wakeboarding and Water skiing are being held at this golf resort. Last night we attended the Opening Ceremony and I’ve never seen anything like it, even the video below doesn’t capture the atmosphere. It really was the most unforgettable experience with dance, gymnastics and a fantastic fireworks display. There were 35,000 people inside the stadium and another 40,000 outside watching on large screens and apparently there were about 1 million people on the streets!! Today we had our practice run on the Nautique G23. I had some problems with my rope length but hopefully all will be OK tomorrow for qualifying.
Thanks,
David

Comments Off on Awesome weekend at Wakestock!

So stoked to make the podium at Wakestock and take 3rd place. Big congrats to Dan Nott on 2nd and to Sam Carne on his win! Big congrats to Megzy Barker on taking the 1st place in the Women’s division. It was an awesome weekend with sunshine, great music, calm water and a lot of fun.

Heading off to take the ferry to Wakestock today and it looks like the weather will be brilliant. Sunshine instead of rain! Should be a fun comp.

Flyboarding is awesome!

Hey everyone,

I’m just home from an amazing weekend at the Whitehaven Festival in the north of England. Dan Kavanagh, Ash Murray, Rob and Joe Skelly and I all ‘road tripped’ over together which was top notch banter! Details

Comments Off on Wakeboarding in Florida

Hi all,

What a brilliant trip to Florida so far. It’s been fantastic to ride in hot weather with very little wind and I’ve had the opportunity to ride with lots of different people at Chain of Wakes in Winter Haven, Freedom Wake Park and OWC in Orlando. The highlight so far was when I landed my first Whirly 7. I was so pumped! Also had a super fun time on all the roller coasters at Busch Gardens in Tampa. Still another week to go……..
Thanks,
David
Comments Off on Wakeboarding – from Dublin to Orlando

It has been a really eventful couple of weeks! After finally finishing my exams, I had a week at home to ride and have the banter with all the lads. After this we had such a sick weekend riding at the Dublin Docklands Festival. There were about 50,000 people there over the whole weekend. Thanks to Des Burke-Kennedy for the photos.

Huge congratulations to Harley Clifford, Shota Tezuka and Andrew Adkison on taking Gold, Silver and Bronze at the World Cup stop in Palembang. I was so mad that I couldn’t be there but unfortunately I have my university exams starting tomorrow. Well done too to Raimi Merritt, Nicola Butler and Bec Gange on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, in the Ladies.

Comments Off on Great wakeboarding weather!

It’s official! We’re on course for the coldest March in 50 years. Not only has it been cold but  it’s been really windy too. Another eight weeks (and all my college exams) before I head to Florida. Wish I could fast track the time. Details

Comments Off on Xtreme Gene before World Cup

Hi everyone,

Just got home from Xtreme-gene in Spain where I spent 4 days riding to get me ready for the World Cup in Australia this weekend!
I had such an unreal time out there riding with a bunch of cool people like Andreas, DC, and Jack Hammersley! It was pretty sick riding with them as we had a good variety of riding, from myself and DC practising contest passes to Jack and Andreas doing big floaty styley tricks! Details
Comments Off on New cable wakeboard open in Dublin Docklands!!!!

Grand Canal Dock

Hey guys,

This week has been a week that will be remembered for a long time! Ireland got its first ever permanent cable system! I think it’s really going to change things for wakeboarding in Ireland. Not only for riders like myself who want to train as often as they can for competitions and to improve our riding as a whole, but also to really get the name of the sport and what it’s all about out there to everyone. Wakeboarding & Banter

Hey Guys,

Just back from a really really fun weekend riding at my place in Cavan. Fortunately, the weather was actually okay for most of the weekend so we were able to get a good bit of shredding done!

On Saturday it was myself, Sian Hurst, Sam Carne (who hadn’t ridden in the cold for 7 years!!) and Brian Deegan who took his first set after 11 months off the water due to his knee surgery. We had a great time and the water was like glass, and the sun even popped out for about 12 minutes!

Then on Saturday we were joined by Ashley Murray (Big Ash) to come for a shred or two. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t quite as on par as Saturday, but none the less, we all managed to have a slick time in the rain, and do a few cool tricks and we had a lot of banter.

Looking forward to getting out to Xtreme Gene in Spain very soon before heading to Aus for the World Cup in March 🙂 Details

In memory of Cianne Naji

This weekend the entire Wakeboard community worldwide, and all of Ci’s friends and family, were devastated when she passed away. Ci fought a long hard battle against Cystic Fibrosis for her whole life. Despite this she was still one of the most banterful and cheerful people anybody could ever come across. Ci was always up for having fun and really was a great example of living life to the fullest. Details
